salute the Tricolour. The Prime Minister also delivers a speech from the
ramparts of the Red Fort.
Republic Day
India became a republic on 26 January,
1950. This means that the Constitution of
India came into force. It is the supreme
law of the country. All laws and rules in
the country have to be according to it.
So, we celebrate 26 January as Republic
Day each year.
Republic Day is celebrated in all schools,
villages, towns and cities. The main
function is held at the Rajpath in New
Delhi. The President of India hoists the Tricolour and all people salute it.
They also salute the martyrs at the India Gate.
A grand parade is held at the Rajpath. The army, the navy and the air force
show their strength. Many other departments and states of India take part
in this colourful parade. Many students too take part in this. The brave
children also take part in it.
Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi was one of the greatest leaders of India. He fought for our freedom.
He was born on 2 October, 1869, so we
celebrate this day as Gandhi Jayanti each
year.
The President, the Prime Minister and
many other people visit the Gandhi
Samadhi and offer floral tribute. A large
number of programmes are also held all
over the country. People spin cotton and
remember Gandhiji, whom they lovingly
call Bapu .
