Dussehra
Dussehra is also called Vijaya Dashmi . It is
celebrated in the month of October. It is
believed that Lord Rama achieved victory
over Ravana on this day. It symbolises the
victory of good over evil. It is preceded by
a ten-day-long Ramlila , which is the
depiction of Lord Rama’s life. On this day,
a large effigy of Ravana is erected, which
is burnt down by Rama as a mark of
victory of good over evil.
Dussehra is celebrated as Durga Puja in West Bengal, in which Goddess
Durga is worshipped.
Lohri
Lohri is mainly celebrated in Punjab on
13 January each year. In the evening,
people raise a bonfire, offer it groundnut,
popcorn and sweets, dancing and singing
round the bonfire.
Onam
Onam is mainly celebrated in Kerala over
four days. It is believed that King
Mahabali comes to his kingdom on this
occasion. People wear new clothes and
greet one another. Elephant processions
and boat-races are held on this occasion.
Gurupurab
Gurupurab is celebrated to mark the birthdays of the ten Sikh Gurus. The
birthday of Guru Gobind Singh , the tenth Guru, is celebrated with fanfare.
