Holi
Holi is called the festival of colours . In the
month of March, it is celebrated over two
days. On the first day, a bonfire is raised
in the evening. It is called Holika . On the
following day in the morning, people play
with colours. They daub Gulal on others’
faces and hug one another. Children enjoy
this festival the most. They play with
water-filled balloons and water-guns.
Sweets are cooked. Gujhia is a special dish of this festival. People offer
sweets and other eatables to the visitors.
Holi is a festival of peace and harmony. People forget their old quarrels and
become friends again. In the afternoon, people take a bath, wear new
clothes and visit their friends and relatives.
Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan is a festival between
brother and sister; it shows the intense
bond of love between them. In the
morning, sisters tie a sacred thread, called
Rakhi , on the wrist of their brothers, who
in turn, give gifts or money. They pray for
each other’s well-being.
Pongal
Pongal is mainly celebrated in Tamil
Nadu. It is celebrated over three days. On
the first day, Rain God is worshipped. On
the second day, Sun God is worshipped.
On the third day, Cow is worshipped.
Pongal rice is the special dish on this
occasion.
