Traditional Dress

Men wear a variety of dresses in different regions :

u Dhoti-kurta is quite common in North and East India.

u Lungi is popular in North and South India. It is called veshti in Tamil
Nadu and mundu in Kerala.

u Churidar-kurta is a favourite dress in Uttar Pradesh.

u Both men and women in Kashmir wear phiran , a type of long coat. It is

worn in winter.

Women too have their different dresses :

u Salwar-kameej-dupatta is popular in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal

Pradesh and Haryana.

u Ghaghara-kurta-odhni is commonly worn in Haryana and Rajasthan.

u Ghaghara-katchli is popular in Gujarat.

u Mundu-blouse is worn in Kerala.

Many women cover their faces when they come before strangers.

Headgear

A large variety of headgear is worn in different states in India. A turban is
worn in many different ways, so is a cap. Kullu-cap is popular in Himachal
Pradesh.

Jewellery

Gold and silver jewellery is very popular among women. They wear rings,

bracelets, chains, necklaces, bangles etc. Married women wear mangalsutra
as a mark of their wedding.
