We can group foods as under :
cereals pulses
food grains like rice, wheat, maize, daals like urad, moong, arhar, gram
jowar, bajra etc. etc.
fruits vegetables
apple, banana, guava, grapes etc. radish, onion, tomato, pumpkin,
cabbage, potato, beans etc.
dairy products spices
milk, butter, cheese, ghee etc. cardamom, clove, ginger, turmeric
etc.
beverages edible oils
tea, coffee, milk, fruit-juices etc. mustard oil, coconut oil, groundnut
oil etc.
meat
chicken, fish, mutton etc.
Cereals are the main component of our food. They are called the staple
food . Normally, wheat is the staple food in North and North-west India;
while it is rice in East and South India. Maize, jowar and bajra are popular
in Rajasthan, Gujarat etc.
Spices and oil are used in cooking. Mustard oil and vegetable oil are used in
North India, while groundnut oil and coconut oil are popular in South
India. Spices are used all over the country. They make the food tasty,
fragrant and healthy.
