u It supervises government work in the village.

u It constructs and repairs tanks, wells and ponds.

u It constructs roads and waterways.

u It looks after cleanliness in the village.

Optional Functions Gram Sabha

It is not necessary for a Gram Panchayat to perform these functions, but it
ought to do them :

u To supply good quality seeds and fertilizers to

farmers.

u To hold and manage village markets and fairs.

u To manage clinics and hospitals.

u To manage veterinary centres for animals.

Source of Income

The Gram Panchayat needs money to carry out these
functions. It gets grants from the state government.

Besides, it also collects taxes from shops, fairs,
markets, houses etc.
