valley is famous for the saffron crop. People also rear sheep and goats for wool and
meat. Other important occupations include handicrafts, woodwork, embroidery and
carpet-work. A large number of tourists visit the state, so tourism is an important
occupation.
Men wear kurta-salwar and women wear kameej-salwar . In winter, people wear a long
coat called phiran . Inside the phiran, they carry a kangri , a type of cane-basket with
embers to keep warm. They like to drink kahwa, a type of delicious tea without milk.
Almost all festivals are celebrated here, such as Diwali, Dussehra, Shivratri, Eid etc.
The chief languages spoken here include Urdu, Dogri, Kashmiri and Ladakhi.
Ladakh
Ladakh is a union territory, formed in 2019, with the
capital at Leh. It is located to the north of Himachal
Pradesh. It is located in high mountains, so it has a very
sparse population. The highest battle field, Siachen
Glacier is located here. The Indus is the main river
flowing here.
Owing to extreme cold, vegetation is sparse. It rains little,
so it is a cold desert. The important animals found here
Ladaki man and woman
include yak, bharal (blue sheep), Asiatic ibex (a type of
goat) and black-necked crane. An important antelope, called chiru, is found here
whose hair is used to make the finest quality of wool called shahtoosh .
The principal crops here are barley and wheat. Some people trade in different goods
like carpets, textiles etc. This place is well-known for adventure tourism; you can find
many motorcyclists riding to this place from all over India for adventure. Ladakhi is
the main language and thukpa , a noodle soup, is a popular dish here. Ice hockey is a
popular sport in Ladakh. The festival of Dussehra is celebrated with much fanfare, to
watch which people come from all over the world.
Himachal Pradesh
In this state with charming beauty, there are many
valleys and hill stations. It is well-known for its hill
stations which include Shimla, Kullu, Manali, Dalhousie
and Dharamshala. It is also known for its holy places,
such as Jwala Devi, Naina Devi, Chamunda Devi and
Chintapurni. Shimla is its capital.
