              Northern Mountains and I

As northern mountains comprise from very high to low hills,
lifestyle is quite varied. Moreover, each state in them has its own
lifestyle—rich and unique. The presence of several hill stations here
makes life beautiful and interesting. If you wish to be in the lap of
nature, you will have to seek a place in the northern mountains.
Before proceeding further, read Lesson 2 : The Great Northern Mountains in this book.

The northern mountains extend over the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand,
northern West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur
and Mizoram and the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

                Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir has become a union
territory in 2019. Srinagar is its summer
capital while Jammu is its winter capital.
Here, two main regions are Jammu and
Kashmir valley . Jammu and the Kashmir
valley are cold in winters and pleasant in
summers. Dal Lake A Kashmiri woman

This area has a large number of tourist places. The well-known hill stations here include
Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg etc. It is also known for two cave shrines (Vaishno Devi
and Amarnath). There are two lakes called Dal Lake and Wular Lake. People use
shikaras , a type of boat, for travel and transport on the lakes. Some vendors use shikaras

to sell flowers and vegetables. Houseboats are used as houses and hotels on lakes.
Farming, animal husbandry and tourism are important occupations of people.

Terrace-farming is practised here. In it, hills are cut into steps for growing crops. The
