Many hill stations are located in the Himalayas, like Shimla, Darjeeling,
Nainital, Mussoorie, Manali etc. People visit these places in summer.
In India, there are other hills also. The
Aravalli Hills are located in North-west India
near Delhi and Rajasthan. The well-known
hill station here is Mt. Abu. The Satpura and
Vindhya hills are located in Central India. The
Nilgiri Hills are located in South India where
the well-known hill station Ooty
(Udhagamandalam) is located. There are
several important hills in North-east India
,
also, which include the Garo Khasi and a mountain peak
Jaintia hills.
Great Northern Plain
To the south of the Himalayas is located a
vast flat land. It is called the Great Northern
Plain. The rivers originating from the
Himalayas flow in this area. They have made
the area green and fertile. Two important
rivers here are the Indus and the Ganga, after
whose names, this area is also called the Indo-
Gangetic Plain.

Deccan Plateau
Look at the map of India. You can see that South India is like a cone. It is
surrounded by the sea on three sides—the Arabian Sea in the west, the Bay
of Bengal in the east and the Indian Ocean in the south. A land covered by
the sea on three sides is called a peninsula . Kanyakumari is the southern
most point of the Indian mainland.
A large part of South India is a plateau. A plateau is a high flat land. This
plateau is called the Deccan Plateau. It is rocky. A lot of minerals are found
here.
