The rivers in the plateau mainly carry
            rainwater. The important rivers here are the
            Mahanadi,          Godavari,         Krishna,       Cauvery,

            Narmada and Tapi. The Narmada and Tapi
            flow from east to west; all other rivers flow

            from west to east.

                                                         Indian Desert


                                                      India has a large desert in its north-western
                                                      part. It is covered with sand. It gets little or no

                                                      rainfall. It remains hot and dry. It is also
                                                      called the Thar Desert          . The camel is the most

                                                      important animal in the desert.

             v The camel has several qualities. It has a thick skin, long eyelashes and padded hooves. It

                can live without water for many days. Due to these qualities, it is called the ship of the
                desert  .




               Islands

            There are two groups of islands in India. The

            Andaman and Nicobar Islands                   are located in
            the Bay of Bengal. The Lakshadweep Islands
            are located in the Arabian Sea. An island is

            surrounded by sea on all its sides.

            In India, there are different types of landforms, which have an effect on the

            climate also. The hilly areas in the Himalayas are cold throughout the year.
