4 India : Government

Government and I

The government plays a very important role in our life. The government does many things
for us. If a thief steals our money, the government (police) will catch him. If your house
catches a fire, the government (fire department) will douse it. If a flood comes in the city,

the government will help you. If you fall sick, you can go to the government hospital. You
travel on the road and railway, these are built by the government. If you want to go out of
the country, you need the government’s permission. The government does many more
things for you.

India is our country. The President of India is the head of the nation. The

government rules the country on his behalf.

Our country is very large. A government cannot rule it from one place. So, it
has been divided into three levels. In this lesson, we shall tell you about its

two levels : central government and state government.

Central Government

The central government is

seated at New Delhi , the
capital of India. It rules the

whole country. It makes laws
for important topics. The head
of the central government is

the Prime Minister . He is
elected by the members of Narendra Modi A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

Parliament (MPs). These 14th Prime Minister 11th President
