more. There are a number of historical monuments and other places of tourist interest,
such as the Red Fort, Qutb Minar, Purana Qila, Jama Masjid, Birla Mandir, India Gate,
Pragati Maidan, Lotus Temple, Dolls’ Museum among others.
Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is a densely populated state. It is the largest state in terms of population.
The fertile land has led to large scale farming of wheat, sugarcane, pulses, fruits and
vegetables. A number of important industrial centres are located here, such as Kanpur
and Agra for leather goods, Meerut for sports goods etc. Sugar mills form the
backbone of economy here.
People speak Hindi and other variants of Hindi, like Brij and Awadhi. They wear
different types of dresses such as dhoti-kurta and salwar-kameej . Men wear turban or
Gandhi cap. Wheat is the staple diet of people in western Uttar Pradesh while it is rice
in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
There are many places of tourist interest,
such Agra, Prayagraj, Benaras etc. The
Sangam is located at Prayagraj where the
Ganga and the Yamuna meet. The Kumbh
Mela is held here every 12 years. The Taj
Mahal at Agra is a world famous

Bihar
The lifestyle in Bihar is akin to that of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Bihar has fertile land and
abundant mineral resources, yet its people remain poor. Floods cause a huge loss of
life and property each year. Due to poverty and floods, many
people of Bihar migrate to other states in search for work.
Farming is an important occupation here with important crops
being rice, wheat, sugarcane and jute.
Patna , its capital, is a historical city. Its other places of tourist
interest are Nalanda and Bodh Gaya. People speak Hindi,
Magadhi, Maithili and Bhojpuri. Chhath, Diwali, Dussehra and

Jharkhand
Jharkhand has rich mineral resources, such as iron ore, coal, mica and graphite; so
several important iron and steel industries have come up at Jamshedpur and Bokaro.
