Northern Plains
Northern Plains and I
The northern plains are very fertile lands, so many crops
are grown on an extensive scale. India is self-sufficient in
grain production due to this fertile part of the country. You
may or may not be living in the northern plains, but they
are very important in your life.
Located to the south of the northern mountains, the northern plains are vast
plain lands. They extend from Punjab in the west to Assam in the east. They are
about 2,500 km long. These plains have been formed by the fertile silt brought by three
main rivers and their tributaries. This silt is called alluvial soil . An area drained by a river
is called its basin . So, the northern plains are the basin of these three rivers, which are :
1. The Sutlej River, 2. The Ganga River, and 3. The Brahmaputra River.
