v The place where the Yamuna joins the Ganga is called Sangam, where the
Kumbh Mela is held every twelve years. It is located in Prayagraj, also
known as Allahabad.
Brahmaputra River
The Brahmaputra River rises in Tibet and forms its basin in the eastern part of the
northern plains. It enters India at Arunachal Pradesh and then flows through Assam
and Bangladesh . This area is the rainiest part of the world, so it has become a very
swift river. During rains, it often floods and causes widespread damage to life and
property.

v The Ganga and the Brahmaputra together form the
world’s largest delta, called Sundarbans.
Advantage of Northern Plains
The northern plains are useful to us in many ways :
u The northern plains are very fertile, so a great variety of crops are grown here.
u Because of several rivers, this place has abundant water resources. This is helpful in
agriculture.
u The fertile plains can support a large population.
u It easy to build roads and lay railways in the flat plains.
plain : a large flat land.
silt : mud, sand etc., carried by a river.
basin : an area around a large river.
tributary : a river that joins a larger river or lake.
delta : an area of land, shaped like a triangle, where a river has split into several smaller rivers
before entering the sea.
agriculture : the practice of growing different crops.
