Music and Dance of India

There are two types of music and dance : classical and folk . Classical music and dance
are performed as per specified notes, so you will need training to learn them. On the
other hand, folk music and dance can be learnt in the family.

               Music

Two main schools of classical music are Hindustani and Carnatic . Both of them can be
vocal and/or instrumental. A raga is an important part of vocal music. Many ragas are
sung at a particular time of day or night. Tansen, Haridas and Baiju Bawra are known
to be popular classical musicians in the past. Some noted classical musicians at present
include MS Subbulakshmi, TS Nandakumar and others.

Other popular forms of music in India include filmi music, folk music, Indian rock and
Indian pop. At present, instrumental music is also popular in which different
instruments are used, such as flute, sitar, sarod, veena, mridang, dholak etc. Zakir
Hussain (tabla) and Hari Prasad Chaurasia (flute) are fine musicians at present.

               Dance

The popular classical dance forms in India include Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi,

Several styles of painting and sculpture are practised in India.

               Painting

Painting is quite varied in India. A number of styles of painting
have become popular in India, such as Kangra style, Sikh style,
