speeches, commentaries and so on. It is an important means of mass communication
and entertainment for people, especially in distant places. At present, the FM channels
have become very popular in cities. In addition to entertainment and news, they also

guide drivers about possible traffic jams in different parts of the city. Live sports
commentaries have made radio very popular with the masses.
The television has an advantage over the radio as it also shows the picture. The
television was invented by John Logie Baird in 1926. In India, the television service

was launched in 1959 and the colour television was launched in the year 1982. It is an
audio-visual electronic device. Both auditory and visual senses are used in it. The
pictures and sounds are captured through a video-camera and then transmitted
through signals, which your television set at home catches. A television programme
can be prerecorded or live . Important cricket and other sports matches are telecast live
on television. The television programmes are telecast by satellites.

Films and Documentaries

Films or motion pictures (movies) are
popular means of recreation as well as
mass communication. These can be full-

length movies or short films. These days,
short films are gaining popularity.
A documentary is a short film made on a

Newspapers, Periodicals and Books

A newspaper is generally published daily, though there are some weekly newspapers
too. Their main content is news on diverse aspects, such as politics, business, sports,
national and international events, entertainment etc.

A periodical is normally published weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Some periodicals
are published annually. These include magazines and journals. They are normally
dedicated to a particular aspect, such as politics, science, sports, literature etc. A
general magazine is like a newspaper.
