Secretariat
The Secretariat is like the administrative office of the UN which
functions under the Secretary General. The UN officers sit and
work here. They execute all its administrative work, like
maintaining records and files, holding meetings, sending
delegations etc.

Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
With its headquarters at New York (US), the ECOSOC comprises 54 member-nations.

and famine. For this purpose, it brings different countries and organisations in
dialogue so that peaceful solutions can be found. To achieve its purposes, it launches a
number of schemes and programmes for general welfare of people in different
countries. The session of the ECOSOC is held twice a year.
The International Court of Justice
The International Court of Justice is the court of law of the UN. It comprises 15 judges
who are elected for a period of nine years. Its headquarters are located at The Hague in
the Netherlands. If member-nations bring before it any international problem, it gives
its verdict. It gives advice on matters of international law. It settles any disputes that
arise between/among countries.
Many Indians have been appointed as judges of the International Court of Justice. At
present, Judge Dalveer Bhandari is one of the judges there.

Trusteeship Council
The aim of forming the Trusteeship Council was to help the nations and territories
which were then being ruled by the colonial powers. It had been assigned eleven of
them as trusts. All these trusts have become independent, so this organ is not working
at the moment.
