• The League of Nations was formed after the First World War to ensure peace, but it could not
succeed.
• The United Nations was formed in 1945 after the Second World War.
• The main objectives of the UN include to maintain international peace and security.
• The United Nations has succeeded to prevent any more World Wars.
• The United Nations functions through its organs and specialised agencies.
• The UN has six main organs : General Assembly, Secretariat, International Court of Justice, Security
Council, Trusteeship Council and Economic and Social Council.
• The UN has specialised agencies which deal with different aspects of the world, such as UNICEF,
UNESCO, WHO, ILO and FAO.
• The Universal Declaration of Human Rights expresses the basic rights for all people of the world.
