Gandhiji was firm. He said that non-violence had to be the followed as the main
principle. This was how the Non-cooperation Movement came to a halt. The country
lost a fine opportunity to pressure the British.

               Emergence of New Leaders
            This was also the time

            when some new leaders
            were coming up and
            leaving a mark of their
            work. They have played a
            vital role in the freedom

               Revolutionary Movement

With calling off the Non-cooperation Movement, the freedom movement came to a
grinding halt. Many people were growing eager to get freedom. When they saw the
political leaders sitting idly, they decided to throw the British out of India by the use of
force. These people were called revolutionaries . A large number of young men joined
them. They mainly worked in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal and Maharashtra,

and struck terror in the British government. They undertook a number of
revolutionary activities such as the Kakori Conspiracy Case in 1925 (in Lucknow, Uttar
Pradesh) where they looted the government cash from a train.

             Know It!

v The revolutionaries used guns and bombs, nevertheless they never believed in violence. They wanted to
use weapons to make the deaf government hear their demands. They did not want to kill people
indiscriminately; rather they believed in the principle of self-sacrifice. Bhagat Singh said, “Revolution is
not necessarily a cult of bomb and pistol.”

The important revolutionaries of this time included Ram Prasad Bismil Jogesh
                                                                                                             ,
                                                                       ,
