are popular dance forms. The famous dishes are dhokla, bhakri and srikhand. During
the festival of Navratri, Gujarat comes alive with Dandia.
Daman and Diu
Daman is located on the Gujarat coast and Diu is
located off the south-east coast in Gujarat. Earlier it
was a part of Goa; but after Goa became a state, it
became an independent union territory. Its capital is
Daman .
The people speak Gujarati. The chief occupations are
farming and small scale industries. Important crops
grown here include wheat, rice, millets, groundnut,
pulses and beans. Small scale industries in toys, Fort of Moti Daman
readymade garments, wooden furniture, paperboard boxes and rubber parts have
made a mark on its economy.
Dadra and Nagar Haveli
This small union territory, with its capital at Silvassa , is located between the states of
Gujarat and Maharashtra. It was liberated from the Portuguese in 1954. Farming is the
chief occupation. Important crops grown here are ragi, rice and pulses.
Goa
Goa is the smallest state of India. Its capital is Panaji . It
was raised to the status of a state in 1987. It is chiefly
known for tourism and farming. Its beaches and
forests are very popular among tourists from within
and out of the country, which have become still more
charming due to its culture. The chief crops grown
here are rice, pulses, ragi, groundnut, maize and
millets. The cash crops of mango, banana, arecnut,
cashewnut, coconut and sugarcane are also grown. It is
also a hub of small scale industries such as bakeries, Sea beach in Goa
printing presses, saw mills, packaged food industries,
carbon paper industries, automobile parts industries and polythene industries.
The important languages spoken here are Konkani, Marathi and Portuguese. The chief
festival is Christmas. People are very fond of music and dance.
Kerala
Located on the Malabar coast, Kerala has plains and the Nilgiri hills. The sea has
