its capital. The largest city is Vishakhapatnam, which is a seaport too. Other important
cities include Kurnool and Chittoor. This state is famous for many holy places,
including the Lord Venkateswara Temple (Balaji).
Karnataka
Located on the Western Ghats, Karnataka comprises both plain and plateau. The
Krishna, Tungabhadra and Kaveri are important rivers. Both tanks and canals are used
for irrigation. There are many waterfalls on which electricity is generated. Sandalwood
and teak forests are found in abundance here.
Important occupations include farming, industry and mining. The important crops
grown here are rice, millets, cotton, coconut and sugarcane. The important industries
include computers, silk, machine tools, fertilizers, automobiles etc. It has a large
number of cottage industries in incense sticks and sandal articles. Its plateau area is
rich in minerals, such as iron ore, bauxite,
manganese, gold etc. The Kolar gold mines are
the deepest in the world. Bidri work is quite
popular here.
People of Karnataka speak Kannada, while other
South Indian languages and English are also
spoken. Rice is the staple diet. Carnatic music
and Yakshagan are popular music and dance
forms respectively. Dussehra and many other
festivals are celebrated here enthusiastically. Vrindavan Garden in Mysore
Bengaluru is the capital of Karnataka. Other important cities are Mysore, Hubli,
Dharwar etc. The gardens at Mysore and Bengaluru are very popular with tourists.
The wildlife sanctuaries at Bandipur and Nagarhole are important points of tourist
attraction.
Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu is bounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east and the Indian Ocean to the
south. It has both hills and coastal plains. Kanyakumari, the southernmost point of
mainland India, is located here. The Kaveri is an important river here. The common
varieties of trees found here are sal, rosewood, teak and sandalwood.
Important occupations include fishing, farming and mining. Being on the coast, fishing
is an important occupation. Farming of rice, sugarcane, groundnut and cotton is
practised in its fertile plains; while its hilly areas are used for tea and coffee
plantations.
