20 Bhagat Singh

Bhagat Singh and I

We became free on 15 August, 1947.

Prior to that, the British ruled over us.

They were very powerful. They had a
large army. They caused suffering to

us. So, to get freedom from them, many

leaders fought in different ways. They

have sacrificed their lives for us. One of
them was Bhagat Singh. We are free

today because of people like him.

Bhagat Singh was a young boy. He saw that the British were

harassing Indians. He decided to throw them out of India. He
formed a group of his friends.

Lala Lajpat Rai was a leader. One day, he was with his people. The

police attacked him in which he died.

Bhagat Singh was angry at this. He and his friends killed a police

officer in revenge.

The British government was taking away our rights. It was not
listening to the Indians’ demands. Bhagat Singh and his friend

threw a bomb in the assembly. He threw it not to kill any one, but

to make the government hear them.
