Gandhiji’s Martyrdom
On January 30, 1948, Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by Nathuram Godse while he was
about to address a prayer meeting in New Delhi. The murder shocked the nation and the whole world.
Jawaharlal Nehru declared, ‘Light has gone out of our lives’. The United Nations lowered its flag to
honour the memory of the great man. Gandhiji remained a source of inspiration to the generations that
follow. The world dignitaries visit his Samadhi at Rajghat whenever they visit India. Gandhiji gave India a
new sense of pride in her destiny.
