                                                              Shivaji

Shivaji was born in A.D. 1627 at Poona. His father Shahji Bhonsle was a chief at the
court of Bijapur. Shivaji lived with his mother Jijabai at Poona. Dadaji Kondev was his
guide and teacher who greatly influenced him. Shivaji was also much influenced by
the religious sentiments of his mother. She narrated to him the heroic stories of the
                 Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
Shivaji was a brave soldier. He started his career as the leader of a small band of dedicated Maratha
warriors, which grew into a large disciplined army.
Shivaji perfected the art of guerilla warfare. His soldiers would pounce upon the Mughal armies and
disappear before they could move into action. The hilly Deccan terrain suited them for such a warfare.
